[Cross-strait Express Comment No. 506]
In 2016, the resurgence of Taiwan's Fuxing Airlines was not far away. The Far East Airlines, which was once the largest airline in Taiwan, has recently revived the storm. Since the first resumption of the Far East in 2011, the Far East has benefited from the comprehensive cross-strait relations in recent years and has re-departed. The Far East has also expanded from the traditional intra-island routes to cross-strait routes and international routes. It seems that the reorganization is flourishing. However, on December 12 this year, the operation was announced without warning. From the statement made by the company ’s boss on the 12th, it can be observed that “the company ’s losses are gradually expanding due to the recession on both sides of the strait”, because it ’s not just Far Eastern Airlines. Now even the major attractions and restaurants on Taiwan Island are so distressed, but It is strange that the Taiwan authorities are celebrating the 11.11 million foreign tourists entering Taiwan to a new high. With such a huge contrast, don't the Taiwan authorities feel ironic?
First of all, the Taiwan authorities refused to recognize the "1992 Consensus" and created an "election against the land" election strategy on the island. The mainland ’s various goodwill towards Taiwan compatriots was maliciously discredited by the Taiwan authorities. Such behavior will undoubtedly hurt both sides of the strait. Feelings among fellow citizens have also directly and indirectly led to a substantial reduction in the willingness of mainland compatriots to come to Taiwan. If the political atmosphere is friendly and peaceful, I think the willingness of mainland compatriots to come to Taiwan will also increase significantly. On the other hand, Taiwan is an unfriendly atmosphere. Why do mainland tourists come to Taiwan?
Secondly, with the reduction of mainland compatriots coming to Taiwan, it has become a reality that the demand for flights has been significantly reduced and the number of overtime has been reduced. The author, as a “cross-strait tribe” who travels to and from the two sides of the strait for a long time, is particularly impressed by the cross-strait routes. Aside from the popular major cities, flights from Beijing and Shanghai are stable and will not reduce the frequency of flights. Airline planes are often not fully loaded, and direct flights in other areas with fewer compatriots in Taiwan even appear to be under-reported. At the same time, near the end of the year and the Spring Festival, Taiwan ’s authorities are over Kaka's, this is undoubtedly a cold winter for the operators of the cross-strait aviation industry.
Thirdly, the Taiwan authorities said that 11.11 million foreign tourists came to Taiwan this year. Why is the biggest Shilin night market in Taipei, the author's hometown, operating bleakly? Thinking back to the author ’s hometown of Shilin Night Market, Jihe Road, six years ago, in the evening, tourist buses were always endlessly carrying groups of mainland tourists off the bus to visit the night market. Taipei ’s largest Shilin Night Market was busy. But by the end of 2019 today, the same crowds on the Jihe Road have also receded, and even locals are reluctant to visit the night market. Even at the food stalls, the shoppers clamored to solicit customers to buy two or three kittens. As a native of Shihlin, I can see that there are mixed flavors in my eyes, because only with good cross-strait relations will the mainland compatriots ’willingness to come to Taiwan increase, and the Shilin night market can return to the glory of the past.
In fact, recalling that in the past eight years of major cross-strait relations, exchanges, cooperation and development, all Taiwanese are mainland tourists, and mainland students can be seen on the campus of Taiwan, so they can communicate with their mainland compatriots at any time in Taiwan. Looking back today, we can only say that it is very regrettable that the development of cross-strait relations will be good for Taiwan compatriots. Looking at this farce of Far East Airlines and looking at the bleak operation of Taiwan's tourism industry, how to restore the glory of the past, the most important key is to have good cross-strait relations, and to return to the "92 "Consensus", cross-strait dialogue and negotiation to create a win-win situation, only this is the right way.
